Get Your Credit Report - Step
1 |
|
If you have
been denied credit in the past 60 days you are eligible for a
free copy of your report. Many times it is just easier to go
ahead and order your report. Go to these various credit
reporting websites, and see if you qualify for a free report.
Getting your report will mean you are becoming informed. In
most cases the reports will come to you within 10 days of request.
Once you have the report to review, you need to look it over
thoroughly. Find the most obvious errors and circle them,
such as name, social security numbers, or address. Next get a
highlighter and begin shading items that are inaccurate, such as
accounts that aren't yours, accounts reported in error, account
amounts not accurate etc.
Once this is completed go to document
mania for the next step. |

Your Rights Under
The Fair Credit Reporting Act:
excerpted from an FTC article
You have the right to know all the information in your credit report,
including the source of the information in most cases. You have the
right to know the name of anyone who received your credit report in the
last six months. You have the right to a free copy of your credit report
when your application is denied because of information supplied by the
CRA. Your request must be made within 30 days of receiving your denial
notice. You have a right to add a summary explanation to your credit
report if the problem is not resolved to your satisfaction. You have the
right to dispute inaccuracies in your report. The CRA must respond
to your request within 30 days.
Any company that denies your application must supply the name and
address of the CRA they contacted, provided the denial was based on
information given by the CRA. In addition, a CRA must investigate the
validity of credit report information when you contest the information
in writing.
